Edward D. Etnyre Founder, E.D. Etnyre & Co., 1859 - 1933
As a one of twelve children in a pioneer Illinois farm family in the mid-1800's, Edward D. Etnyre became well known by the neighboring farms for his inventive, labor-saving devices. In the years that followed, young Edward developed ingenious wooden tanks to haul water to steam-operated farm equipment. His concepts evolved into street sprinklers and eventually bituminous asphalt distributors. Years later, as asphalt technology and road construction heated up, Edward gave up farming and formed the E.D. Etnyre & Co. in 1898. Under his leadership, the company developed a circulation system that eliminated "freeze-ups" associated with the heavier and hotter asphalts. Soon after came full circulating spray bars that set the stage for modern seal coat application.
