Gary J. Vermeer
(Chairman Emeritus, Vermeer Mfg. Co.)
Designed a wagon hoist in 1947 for his farm, which lead to portable power takeoff drives for hammermills and shellers, PTO-driven tiling trenchers and round balers. In the late 50's, he focused on construction by inventing the stump cutter, then developed the industry's first tree spade in 1965. Vermeer trenchers evolved into the mechanically-driven utility models, and today's hydrostatic trenchers. Very active in his community's charities. Iowa Business Hall of Fame 1986; Iowa inventor of the year 1984.
