Joseph Cyril Bamford

Founder of the JCB Inc. organization, Joseph Cyril Bamford has made a significant contribution to worldwide construction equipment development. Born in England in 1916, Joe Bamford -- or "JCB" as he is generally known -- is recognized as the leading pioneer of the backhoe loader concept in Europe, where he introduced his first machine in 1954. He is also credited with the widespread application of hydraulic technology in construction and agricultural equipment.

Joe Bamford's professional life began in 1945 when he set up a small garage-based business manufacturing trailers from surplus war materials. Though his resources were limited, he had basic engineering skills and a flair for practical solutions to contemporary mechanical problems. His first product, a farm tipping trailer, sold for roughly $140 at a local market. Soon after his trailers proved to be successful, Joe Bamford began to apply the technology of hydraulics to loaders, which led to the concept of the backhoe loader in 1954. His company entered the North American market in the 1960's and has since established a substantial presence with major distribution.

As a distinguished mark of Joe Bamford's achievements, he was awarded the CBE by Queen Elizabeth in 1969 for services to export. He has also received honorary doctorates in Engineering, Technology and Business Administration from several European universities. Among his philosophies that endure within the company today are: focus on what you do best; and be innovative and reinvest in product development and the latest manufacturing technologies.
