Robert Studebaker 1911 - 1999, Inventor, Laserplane
In 1965, Robert invented the "Laserplane", an ingenious machine that combined laser technology with a motorized spinning prism for establishing construction and surveying reference elevations. He later developed laser detection equipment that enabled surveying to be done by one person or with automatic control of earth moving equipment. The Laserplane Corporation, which he founded in 1967, merged with the Construction Systems Division of Spectra Physics, now Spectra Precision. His breakthrough dramatically increased the speed, precision and quality of surveying. The majority of equipment in use today employs methodology patented by him. In 1998, his Laserplane invention was accepted for preservation and future display by the Smithsonian Institute.
