Reinhard
Wirtgen
Founder, Wirtgen America & Wirtgen GmbH, 1943 - 1997
IIn
1965, Reinhard built his first concrete breaking machine as a cost-effective
alternative to the demolition ball. He began making the new machines
by forming a service company with a handful of employees.
IIn 1971, his company developed the first hot milling machine for removing asphalt
pavement. These machines were eventually used internationally. In 1976, he developed
the first hot recycler for road surface reprofiling, which later became
the "Remix" process made popular worldwide. In 1977, he sold his
service activities and focused on developing and manufacturing specialized
paving machines. Today, Wirtgen America, a subsidiary of Wirtgen GmbH,
is a leading manufacturer with international operations.
