Reinhard Wirtgen
Founder, Wirtgen America & Wirtgen GmbH, 1943 - 1997

IIn 1965, Reinhard built his first concrete breaking machine as a cost-effective alternative to the demolition ball. He began making the new machines by forming a service company with a handful of employees.

IIn 1971, his company developed the first hot milling machine for removing asphalt pavement. These machines were eventually used internationally. In 1976, he developed the first hot recycler for road surface reprofiling, which later became the "Remix" process made popular worldwide. In 1977, he sold his service activities and focused on developing and manufacturing specialized paving machines. Today, Wirtgen America, a subsidiary of Wirtgen GmbH, is a leading manufacturer with international operations.
