William S. Otis
(deceased, 1813 - 1839)
Invented the first powered construction machine and the steam shovel in 1835, at age 22. (Except for 360° rotation, all the basic principles are still in use today). The Otis Shovel, regarded by many as the grandfather of all construction machines, became the foundation for mechanized construction. (Adopted as the insignia for the Historical Construction Equipment Assn).
